It is well known that NAD+ levels decline with age. NAD+ is a co-enzyme found in every cell required for basic reactions needed to keep cells alive. We cannot function without it. NAD also works with proteins and makes sure they are in the proper orientation for them to function well in the body. Proteins in our cells called Sirtuins also play a crucial role in protecting our cells from decline associated with aging.
Sirtuins play an important role in maintaining the length of DNA and chromosomes. This is the capped ends of DNA called telomeres. Our cells need NAD+ for Sirtuins to work and in turn maintain the long-length of our telomeres. Scientists have said that long telomeres are associated with longevity.
Research also shows that NAD+ protects cells from stress. High levels of NAD+ are predictive of cell survival in studies. Increased NAD+ to NADH ratio brain cells from the ravages of free radicals. Additionally, NAD+ supports DNA repair. Much of the DNA is mitochondrial DNA which is the powerhouse of the cell. NAD+ brings negative charged electrons to areas where DNA has been damaged and promotes repair. This process uses up NAD+ which then needs replenishing. By increasing NAD+ levels this may increase lifespan and make DNA repair easier. Antiaging effects therefore may be seen by increasing NAD levels.
